Impact of the election 2010 on the voluntary and community sector

Here are presentations from an event held by London Voluntary Service Council (LVSC) on Monday, 24 May.  The event looked at the election 2010 and what the results meant for the voluntary and community sector (VCS).

At a glance

Key points for VCS
·         Great opportunity to influence what is discussed at select committees, if have ideas get them in before June
·         Likely that commissioned VCS organisations will need to follow Government commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 10%
·         Opportunities for VCS to use social media to get voice out, comment on websites
·         Use the language of the Government and interpret Big Society document
·         More Big Lottery Fund money to be spent on arts, heritage and sports – get your applications for the other streams in quickly before they close.
·         Really need to focus on how you can show your impact and evidence it well!

How the Coalition sees the VCS
-          small grants are significant
-          in favour of VCS models from Europe and United States (networks, philanthropy and corporate giving)
-          smaller state and move from the centre to the local, power to go to local government and communities (not sure how this will happen), probably not a Minister for London
-          Plus, asset transfer, social enterprise – the Big Society bank from dormant bank accounts, Neighbourhood planning – collaborative democracy (no one sure what this means).

How different?
-          Massive public sector spending cuts
-          Getting funds in from the private sector
-          Move to payment on results – especially effecting welfare to work, sure start and work with re-offenders.
