The Adiaha Antigha Community Achievement Award 2008 Awarded for contribution to raising equality

Tackling inequality is one of the strengths of our vibrant sector – we wanted to hear about groups or individuals you felt have made a significant contribution in this area.
Frank and Kome Owuasu set up African Community School in January 2000 because most parents were concerned and felt that the academic levels of their children were falling also Hackney’s wards are in the most deprived 10% in the country and it has been designated a Neighbourhood Renewal areas.
Their supplementary school is regularly attended by young people from African, Caribbean, Turkish, Kurdish, Bangladeshi, Vietnamese, East European and other European heritages and countries. |

Through family learning and adult learning classes run at Princess May School, Kome and Frank contribute to opening equality of access to opportunities in work and learning. Kome and Frank promote equality in all aspects of their organisation and are positively working with partners in the community to ensure educational equality is available to all who wish to participate.
Samantha Warner from The Learning Trust nominated African Community School and said of Kome: 'Outstanding contributor to the community and a well-deserved award. Kome welcomes everyone with a warm smile and true generosity of spirit. It’s an honour to know her.'
