The Adiaha Antigha Community Achievement Award 2008 for contribution to services for older people

Winner: The An Viet Foundation

Older people’s services are often overlooked and we were keen to recognise an organisation or individuals who have made a difference to life for local older people.

An Viet is a real grassroots organisation which has been run by and for the Vietnamese community for almost 30 years. The organisation works towards improving the lives of Vietnamese refugees 'one of the most disadvantaged groups to have arrived in Britain' (MIND 2003) but particularly for older refugees, a largely forgotten about group.

The centre provides a lunch club, community events, welfare advice and health provision which are all crucial for integrating older Vietnamese refugees into the wider community.

Zoe Howes, Project Manager said "We are extremely proud of all the hard work we have been doing at An Viet. This award means a lot to us as it is nice to have all our efforts and work recognised".

The An Viet Foundation was nominated by 16 older people who regularly attend their older people’s support club. One of the nominations said: ‘We are always proud of being a member of An Viet because of its excellent social services for older people. An Viet makes us less isolated and integrated.’
