Grassroots Grants’ is a three year grants and endowment programme that will provide much needed funding to small community groups.
You can apply for up to £5,000 over the next three years and there will be panels held every three months.

NEW! February 2009 There have been changes to eligibility criteria - the upper threshold limit for the annual average income for groups to be eligible for Grassroots Grants has been increased from £20,000 to £30,000. There has also been an extension to when you need to spend the money by, you do NOT need to spend your grant in the financial year it was awarded. You now have until 31 March 2011. - the elibibility criteria: Your organisation only has to be operating for a year or more at the time of your application NOT since October 2006 as previously advertised
- the turnaround time on your application: you will get a decision on this with eight to 10 weeks not within four weeks as previously advertised.
Who can apply?
This funding is for voluntary and community sector (VCS) groups in Hackney who:
- are a not-for-profit, third sector or VCS group based in the City of London, Hackney, Newham or Tower Hamlets

are active in the community for about a year or more at the time of application

have an average annual income of less than £30,000 over the last three years or since the beginning of the group (if less than three years) and be able to provide proof of this

are volunteer led

connected with and/or meeting the needs of the community

have a governing document that contains, at least, the following information: name, aim /purpose, objects, a dissolution clause, a list of Trustees / Committee members and Trustee/Committee member signatures.
How much can I apply for?
You will be able to apply for a maximum of £5,000 over three years. So you could make one application for £1,500 in October 2008, an application for £2,000 in Summer 09 and £1,500 in 2010 or you could make one application for £5,000.
How often can I apply?
You will be able to apply every three months between September 2008 – 2011 but you can only apply for a maximum of £5,000 over three years. Below is a list of panel dates in 2009.

How quick is the turnaround on decisions?
We aim to give you a decision on the success of your application within eight to 10 weeks of the closing date. However, there may delays depending on the number of applications we receive.
Where does this funding come from?
The funding comes from the Office of the Third Sector and is administered nationally by the Community Development Foundation. In Hackney, these grants are administered by HCVS as part of a East End & City Consortium. managed by St Katharine & Shadwell Trust, the community foundation for the East End and City of London . The Trust has teamed up with Hackney Council for Voluntary Service, Newham Voluntary Sector Consortium and City.COMM.
