what: The youth futures programme consists of six community projects which focus on engaging young people who are either involved in or on the periphery of being involved in gun, gang and knife activity.   The six projects are:

  • Hold It Down - young people led events management social enterprise  http://www.holditdown.biz/
  • Code 7 - offers personal development and training in music for young people
  • The Showcrib - young people led social inclusion project which provides initiatives for young people between the ages of 12 and 21  http://www.thecrib.org.uk/
  • Sky Partnership - offers youth-led themed programmes to address the personal support needs of disadvantaged young people, aged 10 to 25 years  http://www.skypartnership.org.uk/
  • Dakrobi Arts - provide support for young people’s learning, development and welfare through the arts, workshops, performance and educational programmes and residential programmes
  • Streetwise - offers young people training in making music and music technology  Click here for more information.

how: The project aims to encourage young people in Hackney to become involved in alternative activities to being on the streets. These activities are based around:

  • music production and promotion
  • sports management and psychology
  • peer mentoring and conflict resolution.

The projects commissioned as part of this programme have been extremely well subscribed to and feedback from the projects is extremely positive.

history: The Youth Futures programme began in January 2006, we have been successful in organising many events for young people across the borough such as: Hackney’s One Love and Peace Week event, September 2006, Black Heroes in the Hall of fame, April 2007, Hackney's Week of Civic Pride September 2007, Get Set Hackney Olympic careers event and Art of Heritage March 2008.

who: This project is commissioned by Team Hackney managed by the Strategic Priorities Unit of enter text Hackney Council for Voluntary Service (HCVS), headed by Unit Director, Gary Francis and Dave Ramdial, Business Support Manager. The Youth Futures project is part of a suite of interventions to address the issues faced in Hackney regarding gun and gang activity.
